The Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship Fund (Est. 1999)

The Alumni Association of Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing established this scholarship to continue the school’s legacy of academic excellence and community service.  The Alumni Association has long recognized the importance of higher education in the nursing profession.

The Becky Babcox Endowed Scholarship in the School of Nursing

This scholarship was established by Robert B. Kepple in memory of his mother, Becky Babcox. This scholarship was established by Robert B. Kepple in memory of his mother, Becky Babcox, to recognize the importance of quality and compassionate health care and to applaud the wonderful ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ nursing students and graduates who cared for her.

The Charles R. and Janice L. Barton Scholarship for Students in the Graduate Nurse
Anesthesia Program (Est. 2001)

This scholarship was established in 2001 through the generosity of Mr. Charles R. and Mrs. Janice L. Barton and is awarded to graduate students pursuing a degree in the Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Program based on financial need and scholastic achievement.

The Edna C. Berry RN Scholarship Fund (Est. 2008)

This scholarship was established by Judge Harold and Jeannette White in memory of Mrs. White’s aunt, Edna Berry.  Ms Berry dedicated her life to serving others.  As a surgical nurse she proved her commitment to excellence and high standards not only through her care of patients but also in co-authoring a textbook, Berry & Kohn’s “Operating Room Technique,” published in two languages and still in use today in the 13th edition.  The student should demonstrate excellence in study, a commitment to high standards in nursing care and a selfless desire to serve others.

    The Charles V. Bowen, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

    This memorial scholarship was established by Molly Bowen and the Summit County Medical Society in memory of Dr. Charles V. Bowen, Jr., a devoted husband and dedicated physician in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

    The Carol A. Brodbeck Nursing Scholarship (Est. 2006)

    This scholarship was established by the family of Carol A. Brodbeck following her untimely death in August 2006 to honor Carol’s passion and love of life, and her dedication, knowledge, and compassion in the nursing profession.  Carol Brodbeck worked in the medical system for more than 35 years.  She helped establish home care for diabetics while working for Visiting Nurse Service and she directed the Accelerated Nursing Program at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ.

    The Gary S. Calogar Memorial Scholarship (Est. 1993)

    This scholarship was established by the family of Gary S. Calogar (BSN ’84) in his memory.  Gary had worked as a cardiothoracic nurse clinician.

    • Nursing Class Standing – Incoming Sophomore (3 years of support renewed annually for normal course of study)

    The Gary S. Calogar Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship was established in 1993 by the family of Gary S. Calogar (BSN ’84) in his memory.  Gary had worked as a cardiothoracic nurse clinician.  The recipients of his scholarship are selected on the basis of need and the personal qualities associated with the exceptional nursing student.  It is awarded to a student entering the sophomore class and can be renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA and follows the normal course of study.  Applications will next be considered for incoming sophomores fall semester 2018.

    The Cameos of Caring Endowed Scholarship

    This scholarship was established in 2002 from funds raised at a regional event designed to help retain current nurses and recruit new nursing students to the profession. The Cameos of Caring event enhances the image of nursing by publicly honoring outstanding nurses. Initiated by then-dean Cynthia Flynn Capers, ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ’s College of Nursing was joined by Johnson & Johnson (Presenting Sponsor), Akron General Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron and Summa Health System (Co-Sponsoring Hospitals), and Barberton Citizens Hospital and Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital (participating hospitals).  Many other area hospitals are now involved in the Cameo of Caring Gala.  This scholarship is awarded to deserving and qualified freshmen who are “Direct Admits” to the College of Health Professions as well as RNs or LPNs working toward the BSN degree.  Once an applicant has been awarded the scholarship, they can be assured of continued financial assistance each year providing they maintain themselves in good standing in the College of Nursing.

    The Lillian DeYoung Scholarship to Promote Nursing (Est. 1988)

    This scholarship was originally established with a gift from the Class of 1988 to honor Dr. Lillian J. DeYoung upon her retirement as Dean.  Subsequent gifts to the scholarship fund were anticipated from the Collegiate Nursing Club and Dr. DeYoung.  Dr. DeYoung was the second Dean of the College of Nursing, serving from 1975 to 1988.

    The Mary DiDonato Nursing Scholarship (Est. 2007)

    This scholarship was established by Mary DiDonato, an oncology nurse with 37 years of service which included 30 years as a head nurse at Akron General Medical Center.  She endeavored to always recognize excellence in nursing practice.  Mary dedicated her life to the profession of nursing as well as community service.

    The Arthur Dobkin Nursing Scholarship (Est. 1988)

    This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Dobkin.  Dr. Dobkin served as the first vice chairman of the College of Nursing’s Advancement Council, was a 1928 graduate of ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ and a practicing physician for over 50 years.  He provided wise counsel and insight for the college from the perspective of a physician as well as provided personal financial support and tireless efforts at generating further financial resources.

    The Clara D. Dye Nursing Fund (Est. 1953)

    This fund was originally established as a student scholarship at People’s Hospital - now known as Akron General Medical Center - for students in their School of Nursing.  When the school closed, the responsibility for this scholarship was transferred in 1984 to the College of Nursing at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ.

    The Ann Van Blaricom Falor Scholarship in Nursing (Est. 1976)

    This scholarship was established by William H. Falor, MD, in honor of his wife, Ann Van Blaricom Falor to support an academically talented Junior in the College of Nursing.  The awardee may request a renewal of the scholarship for their senior year based on continued academic merit.

    The Edward W. and Florence A. Fitzgerald Scholarship (Est. 1994)

    This scholarship was established by Dr. Phyllis A. Fitzgerald, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor for the College of Nursing to honor her parents, Edward W. and Florence A. Fitzgerald, who supported her when she initially entered the field of nursing.  Her parents had always been advocates for higher education and her father was a teacher for 37 years in a public school system until his death in 1964.

    The Michael and Pauline Forster Scholarship Fund (Est. 1998)

    This scholarship, established in memory of Michael and Pauline Forster by their children, seeks to provide financial support to students in the physical sciences and the College of Nursing.  Michael Forster had a PhD in physics from Notre Dame (1951) specializing in polymer research.  Pauline Forster was an RN (Meyer Memorial, 1945) who worked in the areas of public health, newborn nursery and surgical medicine.  This scholarship rotates every two years, between the College of Polymer Engineering and the School of Nursing.

    The Helene Fuld Health Trust (Est. 2006)

    The Helene Fuld Health Trust is the nation’s largest private funder devoted to nursing and nursing education.  Dr. Kathy Ross-Alaolmolki, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor in the College of Nursing, was awarded a $550,000 grant to support outstanding students and future leaders in nursing.  The fund was originally created in 1935 by Dr. Leonard Felix Fuld and his sister, Florentine, in honor of their mother Helene and dedicated to “the relief of poverty, suffering, sickness and distress.”  In 1961, Dr. Fuld limited the focus to “the improvement of the health and welfare of student nurses.”  The Helene Fuld Trust understands the needs of our increasingly complex health care system and the demand for nurses with higher levels of knowledge and skill to render safe patient centered care and their mission.

    This scholarship was established in memory of Edward Gibney by the graduating class of May 1987.   Contributions were received from faculty, alumni, students, and close friend, Jerry P. Burrell.

    This scholarship was established by Kristine M. and Richard A. Gill to recognize the importance of fostering a culturally diverse nursing workforce in our society.  This scholarship is renewable based on continuing qualification.

    This scholarship was established by Kristine M. Gill, a 1981 College of Nursing graduate, and Richard A. Gill.  Students studying administration, education, or clinical specialization are eligible to apply.

    The Gill Family Doctoral Scholarship (Est. 1999)

    The Dean V. Ruth Gray Scholarship in Nursing (Est. 1993)

    Established by Dr. Gray and Mr. William A Gray, Dr. Gray was the 4th dean of the College of Nursing.  The scholarship was established as a testimony to Dr. Gray’s dedication and strong belief in nursing education.

    This scholarship was established through the estate of Myrtle A. Johnson, Class of 1913, in memory of her husband to provide support for an undergraduate in the College of Nursing.

    The Dr. Irvin M. Kamenir Endowed Scholarship for Nursing (Est. 2006)

    This scholarship was established by Dr. Kamenir to honor those in the nursing profession for their kind and caring spirit.  Dr. Kamenir received an MBA from ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ as well as degrees from Kent State, The Ohio State University and Columbia University.  He was a dentist in the Akron area specializing in orthodontics.

    This scholarship was established by family and friends of Dorothy Kidney, devoted wife of Robert Kidney, past member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ to provide support for undergraduate students in the College of Nursing.

    The Hattie Larlham Foundation Endowed Scholarship (1999)

    This scholarship was established by the Hattie Larlham Foundation to honor Hattie Larlham.  Hattie Larlham was a nurse who contributed to children and the nursing profession through her care and assistance to children and young adults with disabilities.  The recipient of this scholarship will be invited to visit Hattie Larlham as part of their scholarship recognition.

    The Laura Murie Leafgren Nursing Scholarship (Est. 2006)

    This fund was established through a gift from Judge Harold F. and Jeannette White in honor of Jeannette’s sister, Laura.  Laura was a life-long nurse who was loyal in her calling to serve others.  Laura Leafgren showed her dedication to the field of nursing serving as Director of Nursing Education at Akron General and Director of Student Education at Fallsview.  She also spent a year working for Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.  While working for the VA Hospital

    she became known as a strong advocate for her patients.

    The Jacqueline Campbell Lehman Nursing Scholarship (Est. 2008)

    This scholarship was established In memory of Jacqueline following her untimely death.  She and her twin were the first twins to graduate from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1963.  She worked as a nurse prior to raising her family and returned to nursing as a volunteer for the American Red Cross in 1983 and then moving to the Barberton Community Health Clinic in 1994.

    This scholarship was established by Dr. Harry Leuchtag in loving memory of his mother, Ethel, and his wife, Lois, to provide assistance for deserving undergraduate students in the College of Nursing.  Dr. Harry Leuchtag received the University’s Honorary Alumni Award in 1996 in recognition of his devotion to the medical field and higher education.

    This scholarship was established through the assets of the F. P. McMorrow Educational Trust to provide assistance to undergraduate or graduate nursing students.

Eldred Mugford’s professional career included photography, teaching, and writing for television and motion pictures, He produced a highly acclaimed film dealing with autism and autistic children.  He gave up his career in television and motion pictures to care for his aging parents.  He was especially fond of his mother who was a well-respected nurse in Calumet, Michigan.  She specialized in caring for people in their homes and would sometimes walk in cold weather to provide treatment. ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ was one of 15 universities across the country designated to receive a gift to establish the above endowment for nursing students. This scholarship is limited to one year of support only.

    The Annie E. Paul and Betty H. Paul Nursing Scholarship (Est. 2009)

    This scholarship was established by Mr. Samuel J. Paul to honor his mother, Annie, and his wife, Betty.  Annie Paul was a volunteer during World War I which inspired her passion for nursing.  However, she was never able to attend college to make her dream come true.  Mr. Paul met his future wife at the Goodyear Bank where they both worked.  As an alumnus of ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, Mr. Paul wants to assist others in attaining the nursing degree that eluded his mother, who was widowed when he was 4 years old.

    The Jack W. Peckham Memorial Scholarship Fund (Est. 2001)

    This scholarship was established by Marie J. Peckham to honor her husband of 44 years, Jack, a former Marine, retired Electrical Design Engineer from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and an active citizen in his community.  This scholarship was also created to honor the nursing profession.  While ill, Jack was cared for by many fine and compassionate nurses who provided support and guidance for Jack and his family.

    The Summit County Medical Alliance Endowed Nursing Scholarship (Est. 1987)

    This scholarship was established by the Summit County Medical Society Auxiliary to provide support for a diploma RN in the College of Nursing.  Having provided support in earlier years to students in nursing diploma programs, it was the society’s desire to encourage these nurses to stay in the profession and pursue the BSN.  The endowment was revised in 2010 to create more flexibility in awards and to recognize changing circumstances. It is now awarded to both undergraduates and graduate students.  This scholarship is renewable.  The recipients of this scholarship are asked to attend a Summit County Medical Alliance meeting in order to be recognized in person in addition to being recognized through the organization’s publication.

    This scholarship was established by E. Elaine Wilson in recognition of the exceptional care her husband received at The Akron General Wellness Center in the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation group following a heart attack.  High achieving grad students should submit as their application essay a statement of intent about their contributions and future involvement in elderly health.  Mrs. Wilson will participate in the final selection of the recipient.

    The Carol Yassine Scholarship For Nursing Students In Scouting (Est. 1998)

    This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Yassine who have maintained a life-long love for scouting and wish to recognize the scouting ideals of promoting good character, citizenship and service to others.  It is their hope this scholarship will support nursing students who share their commitment to scouting or to the ideals of scouting.  This scholarship was revised in 2011 to allow candidates without direct scouting experience to apply.  This scholarship may be renewed if no other qualified applicants apply the following year.

    Book scholarships

    The school is pleased to have assistance fornursing students who are having difficulty purchasing textbooks.

    The Emy White Memorial Book Loan Fund

    This fund was established in 1999 by Robert and Carol Matej in memory of their daughter, Emy White, a single mother who passed away suddenly in the Fall of 1998 while a student in the School of Nursing.  Emy White was an inspiration and a leader to her friends and family.  The fund is used to purchase books for students in the School of Nursing demonstrating financial need.  These books are loaned to students for the semester and returned to be used year after year.  Applications for new purchases are available in the Student Success Center.  Students are limited to only one new book purchase per semester due to the high demand.  Returned books are available for use on a first come first serve basis in the Student Success Center.
