Preparing for college

How can my student best prepare for success at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ?

Students who take a rigorous college preparatory curriculum in high school tend to become our most successful students at the college level. Achieving academic success in high school can allow a student to enter ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ directly into their degree-granting academic college, and may even pay off with admission and/or scholarships to our highly selective Honors College.

Should my student wait to apply until we have her ACT or SAT score?

No. Your student can (and should!) submit an application even without the supplemental materials, such as standardized test scores. Just send those materials as soon as possible.

Does ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ require the writing portion of the ACT or SAT for admission?

No, but we strongly encourage students to take the writing portion.

How does ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ use ACT and SAT scores?

We take the student’s highest composite ACT or SAT score.

How do my student’s AP scores translate to credit at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ?

A score of 3 or higher will be accepted for credit at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ. will give you a good indication of how your student's AP scores will be used for credit. Your student should speak with his or her academic advisor at New Student Orientation about how these credits will apply to degree requirements for the General Education program and his or her major.

What are the advantages of being a part of the Honors College at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ?

Advantages to being a part of ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ's Williams Honors College:

  • Honors merit scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 for most students
  • First priority at class registration so that you can have the classes you need, with the instructors you select, during the semesters and at the hours you prefer
  • One-on-one research with a faculty member in your chosen area of study
  • Special recognition at graduation and on your transcript
  • Leadership training for all new Honors students

Scholarships and financial aid

Is there a deadline to apply for scholarships?

New Freshmen admitted by March 1 of their senior year will be considered for all available scholarships. Awards are based primarily on high school academic records and ACT/SAT test scores. Many academic departments at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ offer additional scholarships. Therefore, we encourage you to contact the department or college of your student’s intended major for more information.

Should I wait to file the FAFSA until my taxes are complete?

No. It's best to complete the FAFSA with an estimate based on the previous year’s taxes, and then go back and update it later. Now you can transfer your tax return information directly to your FAFSA. Learn more.

Campus life

What is the average class size?

The faculty-to-student ratio is 18:1. Seventy-two percent of our undergraduate courses have fewer than 30 students. Most classes have 25 to 30 students. Students can anticipate a few large, lecture-style classes during their undergraduate career. Lecture courses always have a breakout session during the week so students can collaborate with classmates on assignments and review homework or tests with instructors.

Is there a deadline to apply for on-campus housing?

Yes; preference is given to freshmen who submit a housing application by the May 15 priority deadline.

Is my student required to live on-campus?

Yes, at least during their first year, unless they live in Summit, Stark, Wayne, Medina or Portage counties.

Can a parent put money on a student’s Zip Card?

Yes, just visit the Zip Card website and you can load money directly from your credit or debit card.
