Dr. Yilmaz Sozer, a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ().

Sozer received this distinction in recognition of his “contributions to the design and control of electric machine drives.”

The IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE, and is bestowed upon a very limited number of Senior Members who have contributed importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology bringing significant value to our society. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than one-tenth of one percent of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation.

“I am deeply honored and grateful for this recognition by the IEEE,” said Sozer. “It is an acknowledgment of our contributions to transportation electrification and the development of reliable energy systems. It is my honor to continue to be part of the technical community and help develop next-generation energy systems that serve humankind.”

Contributions to electrical and computer engineering research

Dr. Sozer’s research interests are in the areas of the design and control of alternative energy systems, electric machine drives, transportation electrification, and static power conversion systems that interface energy storage and distributed generation sources with the electric utility.

He received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Before joining ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, he had nine years of industry experience.

As a faculty member at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, Sozer has built a state-of-the-art research program that has attracted students and industrial interest. He has received funding from federal, state, and industrial partners, totaling nearly $9M. He has co-authored a book, published over 300 journals and peer-reviewed conference papers, and has graduated 24 Ph.D. and 24 M.S. students. He is the holder of 16 awarded and 4 pending patents, and the majority of his inventions are licensed by industrial partners for commercialization.

Service activities for the technical community

Dr. Sozer is an editor of the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics, and he served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, and paper review chair for the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He also served as the chair of the IEEE Industry Applications Society Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conversion Systems Committee, and technical program chair for the 2019 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition and 2019 IEEE International Conference on Electric Machines and Drives.
