Office of Multicultural Development Book Scholarship

The Office of Multicultural Development Book Scholarship was initiated in 2003 from contributions received through the first annual Office of Multicultural Development’s Awards Dinner. The purpose of the dinner is to publicly acknowledge the achievements and contributions of University of Akron students and alumni representing diverse populations. Additionally, individuals, organizations, or agencies external to the University are honored for impacting the lives of students of color at the University. The event emphasizes the importance of academic excellence, civic responsibility, and the impact of educational diversity. The funds generated from this event provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in a program offered through the Office of Multicultural Development.

In awarding the scholarships, a selection committee comprised of the Office of Multicultural Development staff and a selected staff member from the Financial Aid office will consider students based on socioeconomic factors, full-time enrollment status, and GPA. Continuing students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and first-year students must have a minimum 2.3 high school GPA.

Each recipient’s academic progress will be reviewed at the end of the semester. If the full-time enrollment status is not met, students will be required to return the scholarship funds dispersed. Failure to do so will result in a financial hold on the student’s account.
