Pope, John T. Memorial Scholarship

The John T. Pope Memorial Scholarship is established in memory of John T. Pope, Class of 1943 in Mechanical Engineering, and a lifelong advocate of education.  With his wife, Alice Jeanne, Mr. Pope championed students who worked hard, met challenges head-on, and were devoted to their profession, their community, and most of all helping each other.  It is in that spirit that The John T. Pope Memorial Scholarship is established with a purpose of helping deserving students who are successfully pursuing an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering.

Rising sophomores and juniors will be eligible for $1000 scholarships that may be renewed one time in the successive academic year.  The student recipient will be chosen by the Chair of the Department of Engineering, who may call upon faculty and others in the College of Engineering to propose candidates.  Criteria will include academic strength, but above all be based on good character and hard work coupled with financial need.

The recipient will be invited to apply for the award according to College of Engineering protocols, and be required to acknowledge this award to the family of John T. Pope.  Acknowledgement letters will be distributed to the family through ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Department of Development.  The acknowledgement will include a description of why the award is important to the student, and talk about professional or community interests they have.

With a recommendation from the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the $1000 award may be renewed for one successive year.  The basis for renewal will be academic strength and continued need.
