Beyer, Dr. William H. and Delores S. Beyer Scholarship for Veterans in Mathematics

The Dr. William H. Beyer and Delores S. Beyer Scholarship for Veterans in Mathematics was established in 2012 by Dr. William (Bill) H. Beyer ’52, retired associate vice president of business and finance for ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, and honors both his career at the University and his wife, Delores S. Beyer.

Bill and Delores were married on September 6, 1959, in Akron, Ohio, and moved to Blacksburg, Va. Bill completed his Ph.D. in statistics at Virginia Tech while serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics. In 1961, Bill accepted a position in ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Department of Mathematics, commencing a relationship with the University that has spanned more than 50 years. The couple has three children – Randall, Kimberly, and Kevin – all of whom earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ.

Originally a ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ mathematics and statistics professor, Bill earned emeritus status and easily parlayed his skills into a number of administrative roles, including head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, associate dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, and ultimately associate vice president of Business and Finance. He retired from the University in 1998 with 37½ years of service.

Bill remains grateful to the University for his education and his career and continues to be part of University life, especially through his active involvement with the Association of University of Akron Retirees.

Delores also is grateful to ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, which she credits for providing her husband and children with an outstanding education. After marrying Bill, Delores dedicated herself to raising her children and supporting her husband. She remains an active member of her church, Beth El Synagogue, and is past president of both Beth El Sisterhood and the Akron Chapter of Hadassah. She volunteered for more than 25 years with numerous civic and community organizations, including ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, and continues to be a member of ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Women’s Club. Delores has decreased her volunteerism over the years in favor of her favorite hobbies, including gourmet cooking, reading, traveling, attending plays and movies, and babysitting her three grandchildren – Riley, Cara, and Ava – whom she adores.

The Dr. William H. Beyer and Delores S. Beyer Scholarship for Veterans in Mathematics was established to support full-time undergraduate veterans and currently serving military members majoring in mathematics at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ. The Mathematics Department, in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid, will select recipients.
