Shuman, Agnes 'Aggie' Athletic Scholarship
The Agnes “Aggie” Shuman Athletic Scholarship was established in 1998 by her children. Aggie lovingly touched the lives of many students in the Akron Public Schools through her service as an adult school-crossing guard. Her 50-year tenure is the longest in Akron Public School history at that position. She was a lover and a longtime supporter of all sports played in the Akron City Series League, and some of her most passionate memories were born in the grandstands as she supported her children and grandchildren on their various athletic fields. Later, her enthusiasm shifted to the teams coached by her sons, and in her final years, Aggie’s orange hat was a prominent fixture in the crowd at Ellet High’s softball games, watching her “adopted” athletes on her son’s teams. This scholarship provides tuition aid for a University of Akron student-athlete with preference given to graduates of Ellet High School, where Aggie loyally followed the teams coached by her sons. The selection of the scholarship recipient will be made by the Department of Athletics with recommendations from Ellet High School coaches and with final review by members of the Shuman family.
