Slocum, Dr. Sally K. Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. Sally K. Slocum Endowed Scholarship was established in 2010 by Dennis H. Gartman, a 1972 University of Akron graduate and editor/publisher of the Gartman Letter, to honor his beloved former professor.
Dr. Slocum is a professor emerita at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ. She was an associate professor of English from 1966 to 1996, when she was recognized with an Outstanding Teacher Award. During her years at the University, Dr. Slocum was involved with the Ohio Shakespeare Conference, serving on the Conference Planning Committee in 1989. Dr. Slocum impacted thousands of lives with her passion and ardor for the literature she taught and instilled in her students. It is that same passion that inspired Mr. Gartman to establish this scholarship in her honor.
Dr. Sally Kennedy Slocum graduated from Columbia College, Columbia, S.C., earning a bachelor of arts degree in English and French. She received her master of arts degree and doctorate in English literature from the University of Tennessee.
Mr. Gartman fondly remembers his formative years at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ and the guidance of Dr. Sally Slocum, who served as his mentor as well as instructor. He graduated cum laude in 1972, earning a bachelor of arts degree in English. Mr. Gartman advocates the benefits of a liberal arts degree, often advising students to “read more literature and study psychology and philosophy – all of which prepares you to deal with the complexity of human nature.”
The Dr. Sally K. Slocum Endowed Scholarship was established by Mr. Gartman to support liberal arts students enrolled in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, with preference given to English majors. Awards will be made by the dean’s office in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid.
