The endowed Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. - Milton G. Smith Endowed Scholarship was established in 1997 by Delta Rho Sigma, the Akron Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. in support of undergraduate academic excellence. The purpose of the scholarship is to honor Milton G. Smith, a dedicated member and unsung hero for his longtime meritorious service and behind-the-scenes work at the local, regional, and national levels of the fraternity. Phi Beta Sigma was founded in 1914 and has been dedicated to community service through the application of education, business development, and working with young people. Delta Rho Sigma has shown its commitment to youth programs through the development of the Sigma Beta Club, which encourages junior and senior males to pursue personal development in the areas of leadership, commitment to the community, and cultural and social awareness.

The scholarship is open to students pursuing a four-year degree in any major. The student is required to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA throughout four years at the University. Preference may be granted to active or prospective members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, but membership is not a requirement. Final selection of the recipient shall be determined by the Delta Rho Sigma Chapter of the Fraternity in conjunction with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
